Speaker Presentation

Dr Norman Swan
Dr Swan is host of The Health Report on ABC radio, co-host of the popular Coronacast podcast and health commentator on ABC Television’s 7.30.  A physician by training, Dr Swan has been the highest profile commentator in Australia on the pandemic.

Thank you for having me to speak tonight.

  • There is a sense for this “thing” to be over
  • Podcasting now for 15 months – community interest and 75,000 questions, people want to know what is happening
  • Perspective for you – news current as of tonight – only 20 months since 1 person COVID 19 in September 2019, now hundreds of thousands and numbers are under estimated.
  • How has it come to this – be ready for the next pandemic.  For a long time it was HIV in the 80s, AIDS has been around for 100 years but blew out in the 80s.
  • Created fear and no one wanted to be transparent about it.
  • World Health Organisation frightened of China and everyone was advised too late.
  • Borders should have been closed to overseas
  • Vaccines – people worried that production has been rushed, evidence that vaccine has worked with tens of thousands recruited for trials.  1 in 40,000 side effects.
  • Australia not opening up until mid 2022
  • Vaccine rollout not successful due to poor productivity statistics – not good procurement.
  • Message for business – Wellness should be in every marketing plan – consumer interest in this is enormous.
  • Book coming out in June 2021 – social connectedness is key in all our lives.
  • 1.  Get immunised
    2.  Wear masks on public transport
    3.  Cant afford to do hotel quarantine – must be open air
  • Need 80-90% immunisation in Australia – 12years old or above will be immunised.

Questions and Answer time was then had.

Leanne Wolf presented Dr Swan with a  thank you gift for his presentation tonight.
